Okay, a permanent account at IJ? (Dudes, I just typed "OJ". Can we set up like "OngoingJournal" or something, so that can be its nickname?)
Anyway. Permanent account at InsaneJournal: $40.
I might perm up my account over there just for a giggle. Quick, before the price goes up. |

Just got a call from my insurance agent. Apparently Lexus Dad called with the claim this morning, and was being kind of a dick about it, esp. when my agent insisted he had to speak to me before putting it through. "He was really getting snippy," says my agent to me. "And I was like, look, buddy, I don't know who think you're dealing with, but I'm not some twenty-year-old kid."
Unlike your daughter, he could have said, who takes two weeks to get back to a person with an inflated estimate, and then doesn't even call the claim in herself but makes her daddy do it three business days later. I can tell it's very, very important to them that this car be "repaired".
Patience for this family: exhausted. Scorn: increasing. Give-a-shit about the whole situation: very close to nil. |

To: TGIFriday's From: Fox Re: this new menu with smaller portions and prices
Hi, guys.
Don't get me wrong, I think the concept here is great. It's just a thing about your commercials that confuses me: I'm looking at a grilled chicken breast with some kind of glaze on it, and it appears to be topped with, I don't know, a mango salsa? Or some diced vegetables? In any event, I see neither peanuts nor chilis, so I'm a little puzzled by the words "kung pao kick". Please clarify.
regards, etc.
To: Semagic From: Fox Re: moods
Dudes, a bunch of new mood options all of a sudden? ... I'm going to assume these are a result of the fact that I'm logged in to GJ and IJ and JF as well as LJ, but yeah, I didn't know that was going to happen.

- in re: yesterday's (locked) memo to self, nothing new. Close to an hour on the phone this morning, perfectly pleasant, still sucks, situation unchanged, nothing to see here, move along.
+ made Carolyn Hax laugh in the chat this afternoon. "Not sure I can spell the face I'm making", that was me.
+ a co-worker who is very body-conscious (in a way that sometimes strikes me as incredibly vain, even though she's very nice) asked me if I've been losing weight, which I have, and told me I look great. Hurrah for random people noticing! |

1. Does Posh Spice-Beckham in fact have internal organs?
2. Because all proceeds today are going to the Children's Miracle Network and the commercials advising us of this made me cry (not the first dozen or so times I saw it, when I only tuned in in time for the kid to break out of the leg braces; but the last time, when I saw the whole thing, with the baby whose cleft lip knitted up and the little girl whose horrible disfiguring burn disappeared), for dinner tonight I will go buy myself a blizzard at Dairy Queen. Yay for eating "well" by doing good. :-) |

To: Lexus Girl From: Fox Re: temporal deixis and other matters
"This Saturday" and "two weeks from yesterday" are not the same day. And even supposing that a paint scuff will cost $1100 to fix -- a point I am by no means willing to accept without discussion -- it shouldn't take four days and require a rental car. Count on my insurance sticking up for me, you spoiled goddamn brat. |

Isn't it interesting that in so many dialects of English, "fiawol" and "firewall" are (so nearly, if not exactly) homophonous? I have decided that the latter may stand for "fandom is rarely entirely worth a loud lament", or something. (In happier times, it could be "fandom is really empty without a little laughter.")
Anyway. In other news, I have been bitten hard by the knitting bug. My college roommate K, mostly self-taught, taught me how several years ago, and I bought some needles but I never picked up the habit; then Junior Dean S taught me how about a year and a half ago, made me practice, and gave me needles for my birthday. I got them out again a few weeks ago and practiced until I was relatively confident with the, you know, extreme basics. And now I'm about eighteen inches into a thirteen-foot scarf, my first real project, and I'm already looking at patterns for socks and hats and going "ooh!" I own three pairs of straight needles, y'all (fortunately in three different sizes -- 5, 10, and 15, or 3.75, 6, and 10mm), and have made exactly one fraction of one thing on them, and I'm speculating about circulars and DPNs and gah. Do I know how to join ends of a round? Of course not.
But here I go. |

[Aug. 7th, 2007|09:55 am] |
Everyone is out today, but they manage to nag me remotely. That's a skill, I suppose.
Yesterday I managed to renew my auto registration and order new plates (since I need to replace the one that disappeared). I'd gone and got an emissions inspection, even though I didn't need to, but they allowed me to register the car for two years so the fee didn't go to waste. Two years from now the car will have about 140,000 miles on it, so if it lasts that long, that'll be a hundred dollars well spent. (Well, $130, including the inspection.) I also got the nice young man at the parts department to come look at the front bumper and tell me there was no point in buying a new base for the front plate, because it wouldn't stay on, so I should just screw the plate directly to the car. Plus he gave me a handful of screws. And then I also, as you saw, got the pictures off my camera at Ritz -- onto a CD, since I can't find my cable. Grar, but at least that other option was available.
A v. productive day. And then I went for a practice with three other singers from my chorus who are doing the music at a girl's wedding from my section. We're doing a sort of festive Kyrie I've never heard before, a kind of call (me) and response (everyone), and Palestrina's Sicut Cervus one on a part, and we sound good! if I do say so myself. That wedding is the same day as Son of a Preacher Man's wedding in North Carolina, so I'm totally singing at the one and then hopping in the car and making a beeline for the airport. It should work out fine. Whee! Thank god it's a long weekend.
Let's see, what else. This morning I have done a quick work thing I had three messages about from yesterday, from people not realizing I wasn't back until today. It took six minutes. I have also tried to contact the allergy-shot people, who are very difficult to reach, but I need to try them again after lunch. Also a little later I'm going to try again to call the voice teacher I contacted weeks and weeks ago; she returned my first call to say she was going to be out of town for a while but would keep my name on her list and call me for a diagnostic lesson when she got back, which would be around 2 July. I think it's been a safe amount of time where I can call her and say "ahem?".
And then poss. I will call my mom and/or my brother. And oh, also, yeah, get some work done.
I know you have all found this fascinating. |

| HELP |
[Aug. 6th, 2007|09:49 pm] |
Okay, so I seem to have a virus. I've been running anti-virus software, but it's possible something got through. I'm running scans now, but the past couple of times I've got Blue Error Screens mid-scan. The screen says something about IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal and then disappears before I can take down any more of the details. And it restarts the computer all on its own. I disconnected the external drive and it's still happening.
Who has suggestions? HELP!

Back at home. Hi! Vacation was lovely. Tomorrow is a day of errands, and I'm back to work on Tuesday.
I'm not really going to be able to go back and read all my skip=348725 flist. So someone just tell me: are we moving? I doubt it, but if it turns out everyone is gone, I guess I'll have to find where they all went. |

Everyone else has gone to bed. I have lurked in the downstairs, reading some background material on How To Chair A Good Bonspiel (one tip: there are some timelines that begin 3 months out -- which, in this case, was two and a half weeks ago. oops!), before calling it a night.
And I just heard Norman, my roommate for the week, fussing on the baby monitor. Who wants to place bets on whether she'll have put herself back to sleep by the time I get up there? (I'll completely ignore her, of course, and move quietly and not turn on the lights, so maybe the next time she wakes up and fusses I'll already be asleep ...) |

[Jul. 31st, 2007|08:49 pm] |
Oh, yay, our very own racewank in HP fandom. And yet, possibly unlike other fandoms' Issues, this one really doesn't have merit on both sides. The word "miscegenation" is an offensive archaism, left over from a time when it really was okay to consider that a relationship in which one individual was not white "polluted" the white race. In these enlightened times, people who maintain this belief tend to find groups of like-minded people in which to express it. Fandom, with all thanks to whatever deity you care to thank, is not such a group.
The community daily_deviant is named with its tongue in its cheek, or so I'd always thought. We [note: I have never been a member of that community; "we" here = fans in general, specifically slash fans] don't really think homosexuality is deviant behavior, do we? And yet the community has its name. What has happened here is a complete collapse of irony, because -- as I said above -- nobody who used the word "miscegenation" was actually kidding, and everybody who heard it knew this.
I don't care how offensive people intend to be. I care how offensive they are. If you use the word "jew" as a verb having to do with getting someone to sell you something at a reduced (possibly lower than fair) price, I will fume and seethe and eventually ask you if you understand how offensive verbal "jew" is. If you say "everything is offensive to somebody" and blithely carry on using "jew" as a verb, I will lose whatever respect for you I began with and tell everyone I know that you have refused to acknowledge what you may never have previously realized was your latent anti-Semitism.
This is exactly what we're dealing with here. I encourage everyone who has any measure of influence over the mods at daily_deviant to continue urging them to change the "miscegenation" prompt.
[eta: Hey, it turns out I'm late to the party. I saw all this last night, and didn't comment on it until just now, and I'd missed the fact that the prompt was changed. Thanks to batagur for the heads up; nevertheless, I'm leaving my post, because I don't want anyone to have the impression that I remained neutral on this issue in any way, shape, or form.] |

Am in Florida with the college friend and her family. New baby is ridiculously cute, but has tummy troubles and also gets hiccups a lot, poor thing. Old baby is nineteen months old, regressing just a bit as one does when a new baby is present, but digging having a baby sister. Vacation yay! |

[Jul. 28th, 2007|05:57 pm] |
Lexus Girl has not called with an estimate, which she said she was going to do this afternoon. I see this as meaning one of three things:- She forgot.
- The dealership said "what damage? oh, we can buff that out no problem" and thus there is nothing for her to call me about (but note she should still call me to say so).
- She went ahead and filed a claim against me without telling me what the estimate was first.
Feh. I hesitate to call her, in case it's (2) -- my feeling is, if I never ever hear from her again, hey, fine! -- but I may drop her an e-mail if I still haven't heard from her when I get back from running my last errand. |

Incredibly productive day huzzah. ( BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE. )

And now I will pack my bags and wrap my presents and possibly even do some laundry. And internally, I will DANCE AND SING because this is the best weekend EVER. |
